Jeremiah lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem, 1630, Rembrandt van Rijn
As we move towards Advent, we are reminded frequently of the prophets of the Old Testament. Jane Williams writes: ‘the prophets help us prepare for the coming of Christ by maintaining an expectation of the presence and action of God. Even in situations where God seemed utterly remote or powerless, the prophets continued to hear God and discern him at work.’ This sense of God’s presence and sustaining action in the world is suggested in this image by the soft light surrounding Jeremiah even in his isolation. In this Advent so different from any other, how do these ideas speak to you?’
